MLB: Atlanta 7, Washington 1

ATLANTA, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- John Smoltz held Washington to one earned run and one hit in seven innings Friday night, as the Atlanta Braves beat the Nationals, 7-1.

In his 206th career victory, the veteran right-hander walked two batters and struck out 10. He was staked to an early lead when Chipper Jones belted a three-run homer in the third, giving Jones 24 homers this season.

Smoltz had a no-hitter through seven innings.

Two other Atlanta players had one RBI, one run scored on a wild pitch and one scored on one of five Washington errors.

Jones had three hits and Jeff Francoeur two for the Braves, who have split their last four games.

Washington scored its lone run on Ryan Church's RBI double in the eighth.

Ronny Belliard, who broke up Smoltz’ no-it bid, had the other hit leading off the eighth for the Nationals, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

The losing pitcher was Joel Hanrahan (4-3).
