Kuznetsova, 22, won her lone Grand Slam title here in 2004 by beating Elena Dementieva in an all-Russian finale. The two-time major finalist Kuznetsova was last year's runner-up at the French Open.

Kuznetsova's opponent in the quarters will be another unseeded 18-year-old, Hungarian Agnes Szavay, who beat Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Szavay, who will appear in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, lost to Kuznetsova in a finale in New Haven less than two weeks ago.

In the final match of the night, sixth-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze defeated Austria's Tamira Paszek 6-1, 7-5 in just 78 minutes. Chakvetadze has yet to lose a set in the tournament.
