Yankees demote Mussina

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees have removed Mike Mussina from their starting pitching rotation.

The move to 2006 first-round draft pick Ian Kennedy for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay was announced by Manager Joe Torre before Tuesday's 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

"He was disappointed," Torre said on the Yankees’ Web site after a one-on-one meeting following batting practice. "We'll skip the one start and we'll make an evaluation."

The 38-year-old right-hander was torched for nine hits and six runs in three innings of a 16-0 loss at Detroit Monday night.

Mussina, a 17-year veteran who began his major league career with Baltimore, is 8-10 this season with 29 walks, 76 strikeouts and an ERA of 5.53 in 123 2/3 innings. He has 247 MLB career wins.

Kennedy, currently at Triple-A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, will be making his first major league start Sunday.
