SAN FRANCICSO, Calif., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants Thursday dealt pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named.
It was the first trade between the bitter National League West rivals since Dec. 11, 1985, when the Dodgers sent outfielder Candy Maldonado to San Francisco for catcher Alex Trevino.
The 37-year-old Sweeney trails only Lenny Harris in career hits as a pinch-hitter -- with 155 to 212 for Harris -- and leads all active pinch-hitters with 15 home runs and 96 RBI.
The 13-year veteran also has played for St. Louis, San Diego, Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Colorado.
"Mark provides us with another experienced bat off the bench," said Dodgers' General Manager Ned Colletti on the team's Web site.
Sweeney said the deal "adds to my color of rainbows of major league uniforms."
Sweeney had a pinch single Thursday in his final game with the Giants, a 3-1 loss to Washington.
