MLB: San Francisco 4, LA Dodgers 2

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds contributed to a three-run first inning Thursday night, but he went without a homer as San Francisco downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2.

Needing one more home run to equal the all-time record owned by Hank Aaron, Bonds had a hit in two at-bats and walked twice before being removed for a pinch-runner in the seventh.

Bonds drew a walk in the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Frandson. Bonds singled in the second, fouled out to the catcher in the fifth and drew an intentional walk in the seventh, when the Giants scored their fourth run.

Barry Zito (8-10) got the win by giving up a run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The loss went to Brett Tomko (2-9), who in five innings allowed three runs on five hits.

San Francisco's Brad Hennessey came on with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth and escaped the jam, then loaded the bases himself in the ninth.

Steve Kline came on to get the final two outs while allowing a run to score and picked up his second save.
