Sharapova coasts in second round

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Maria Sharapova, the No. 1 seed and defending champion, advanced past the second round Wednesday at the Acura Classic.

Sharapova easily defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-3, joining Anna Chakvetadze and Venus Williams in the third round.

Chakvetadze won her 10th straight match by eliminating Meghann Shaughnessy 6-4, 6-4. Williams was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Virginie Razzano.

Other winners included sixth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova, eighth-seeded Dinara Safina and No. 9 seed Elena Dementieva.
