Tom Watson wins third senior British Open

GULLANE, Scotland, July 29 (UPI) -- Tom Watson won his third Senior British Open in five years Sunday as he was the only participant to match par at Muirfield after four windy days.

Watson closed with a 2-over 73 in the final round for a four-day total of even-par 284 to defeat Mark O'Meara and Stewart Ginn by a shot.

Muirfield also was the site of his 1980 British Open victory on the PGA Tour. Watson now has eight British Open titles among his 13 career majors on the PGA and Champions Tours.

Ginn, the overnight leader made a birdie at the 17th to tie O'Meara for second place.

O'Meara (72), the 1998 British Open champion, joined him at 1-over 285 72. Both missed birdie putts at the 18th hole that would have sent the tournament to a playoff.

Defending champion Loren Roberts tied for fourth with Jay Haas, Lonnie Nielsen and Eduardo Romero at 288.
