MLB: Detroit 9, Chicago White Sox 6

CHICAGO, July 23 (UPI) -- Curtis Granderson homered on the game's first pitch and scored four runs times Monday to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Granderson finished with three hits and reached base five times.

Magglio Ordonez had three of Detroit's 18 hits with an RBI and scored once for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who won for the sixth time in eight games to extend their division lead to two games over Cleveland.

Mike Hessman, in the majors for the first time in three years, hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning.

Jason Grilli (4-2) threw 1 1/3 innings to get the win.

Mark Buehrle (7-6) allowed 14 hits and seven runs over 6 1/3 innings. The White Sox left 14 men on base in losing for the fourth straight time.

Josh Fields hit a two-run homer for the White Sox.
