Hingis wins first-rounder at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England, June 25 (UPI) -- Martina Hingis beat back two match points in claiming a first-round victory at Wimbledon while Justine Henin and Serena Williams had easy wins Monday.

Several matches were delayed by rain in the first day of the year's third Grand Slam tennis event. The start of the Hingis match was delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain.

Hingis, seeded ninth, rallied for a 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 6-0 win over Naomi Cavaday to earn a second-round match against Aiko Nakamura.

Henin, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, roared past Jorgelina Cravero 6-3, 6-0 and Williams, seeded seventh at Wimbledon, beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino 7-5, 6-0. Henin won this year's French Open and Williams claimed the 2007 Australian Open.

Also Monday, No. 15 Patty Schnyder defeated Camille Pin 6-1, 4-6, 8-6; 16th-seeded Shahar Peer was a 7-5, 6-2, winner over Tamarine Tanasugarn; No. 20 Sybille Bammer ran past Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-2; and 25th-seeded Lucia Safarova beat Zuzana Ondraskova 7-5, 6-2.

Other winners included Nakamura, Alicia Molik, Roberta Vinci, Kaia Kanepi and Laura Granville.
