MLB: St. Louis 7, Kansas City 6 (14 inn.)

ST. LOUIS, June 21 (UPI) -- Ryan Ludwick, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, homered to lead off the 14th inning Wednesday, giving St. Louis a 7-6 win over Kansas City.

Ludwick's homer came on a 2-2 pitch off Jorge De La Rosa (4-8), the Royals' eighth pitcher of the night.

St. Louis overcame deficits of 4-1 and 6-4. The Cardinals sent the game into extra innings when Albert Pujols doubled home Aaron Miles with nobody out in the ninth.

Pujols eventually reached third with one away and Ludwick was brought in to try to drive in the winning run. Ludwick struck out in that at bat, but he made up for it five innings later.

The win went to Kip Wells (3-11), who allowed one hit while pitching the 13th and 14th innings.
