NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has asked Yankees slugger Jason Giambi to meet with former Senate majority leader George Mitchell.

Mitchell heads a committee conducting the sport's investigation into steroid use.

The New York Yankees DH admitted past use in a recent interview with USA Today.

He since has been interviewed by Rob Manfred, baseball's vice president of labor relations and human resources.

"It is in the best interests of baseball for everyone, including players, to cooperate with Sen. Mitchell in his investigation so that Sen. Mitchell can provide me with a complete, thorough report," Selig said in a statement Wednesday.

"Jason will determine how to respond to the Commissioner's request that he meet with Sen. Mitchell after consulting with MLBPA counsel and his own lawyer," said general counsel Michael Weiner. "Such decisions are for the individual player to make."

Giambi, who has 357 career home runs, is on the 15-day disabled list with torn tissue in the arch of his left foot.
