Mickelson wins Players Championship

PONTE VERDA, Fla., May 13 (UPI) -- Phil Mickelson stayed cool under pressure Sunday, shooting a 3-under 69 to win his first Players Championship, edging Sergio Garcia by two strokes.

Mickelson finished at 11-under-par 277 at the Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass. It was his second PGA Tour victory this season, having won earlier at Pebble Beach, and the 31st of his career.

Mickelson withstood a late charge by Garcia, who birdied four of his last five holes to finish with a 6-under 66 for the day and minus-nine for the tournament.

Overnight-leader Sean O'Hair was a final-day fade. He was two behind Mickelson throughout the back nine, then put two balls in the water at 17 and fell down the leader board. He ended up with a 4-over 76 and 11th place at minus-five.

Tiger Woods posted a 5-under 67 and tied for 37th place at even-par 288.

Stewart Cink carded a 6-under 66 and tied Jose Maria Olazabal, who shot a 67, for third place at minus-eight. Jose Coceres managed a 2-under 70 for fifth at 7-under-par 281.
