Strong finish gives Brier China Open lead

SHANGHAI, April 14 (UPI) -- Markus Brier used birdies on the final three holes Saturday to grab the third-round lead at the Volvo China Open.

Brier finished with a four-under-par 67 Saturday and is at six-under 207 heading into Sunday's final round. Scott Hend is in second place after shooting one-under 70 for a three-round total of five-under 208. Andrew McLardy is in third at four-under.

Raphael Jacquelin, who led after each of the first two rounds, had a four-over 75 on Saturday and is in a tie for fourth with Richard Sterne and Graeme McDowell.

Brier was even on the day after 12 holes, offsetting three birdies with three bogeys, but posted a birdie in No. 13. His iron play heated up on the closing holes where he made birdie putts of less than 6 feet on 16, 17 and 18.

Jacquelin and Adam Blyth were in the day's final group but had a pile of trouble. Jacquelin bogeyed each of the first three holes and didn't have a birdie on the day. Blyth was tied for the lead after eight holes but was five-over on the backside to fall into 11th place.
