NHL: New Jersey 3, Philadelphia 2

PHILADELPHIA, April 5 (UPI) -- Jim Dowd scored a short-handed third-period goal Thursday as the New Jersey Devils beat Philadelphia, 3-2, to clinch the NHL's Atlantic Division title.

Devils' net-minder Martin Brodeur made 34 saves on 36 shots to break the all-time NHL mark for wins in a single season with his 48th victory of the campaign.

Philadelphia's Jeff Carter and New Jersey's Jamie Langenbrunner (power play) exchanged first-period goals for a 1-1 tie.

Philadelphia's Simon Gagne and New Jersey's Sergei Brylin (power play) did the same thing in the second, setting up Dowd's game-winner mid-way through the third.

Martin Biron was beaten three times on 33 shots for the Flyers, who have only 54 points and are close to finishing the season with the worst mark in franchise history. They finished the 1969-70 season with just 58 points.
