NHL: Philadelphia 5, Carolina 1

PHILADELPHIA, March 28 (UPI) -- Jeff Carter had two goals and one assist Wednesday night as the Philadelphia Flyers humbled the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-1.

He scored his first goal at 13:31 of the first period to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.

His second goal at 19:27 in the third was into an empty net.

Derian Hatcher had a goal and an assist; Mike Knuble and Braydon Croburn each scored once; Knuble and Simon Gagne both had two assists; and Martin Biron stopped 23 of 24 shots for the Flyers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Ray Whitney scored the lone goal at 19:56 of the second; and John Grahame surrendered four goals on 24 shots for the reigning champion Hurricanes, who have lost two straight following a three-game winning streak.

The loss keeps Carolina in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 84 points, two behind eighth-place Montreal.
