NHL: Carolina 7, New Jersey 2

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 17 (UPI) -- Chad LaRose scored twice Saturday afternoon to help Carolina rout the New Jersey Devils, 7-2.

It was one of the worst games in the career of New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur, who was peppered for four goals on only 12 shots.

LaRose scored 4:48 into the game, and second period goals by Josef Vasicek, Ray Whitney, Rod Brind'Amour, and LaRose gave Carolina a 5-1 lead entering the third.

Josef Vasicek had a goal and two assists; and John Grahame stopped 18 of 20 shots for the Hurricanes, who began the contest with 78 points, tied with the New York Islanders, for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference.

In relief, Scott Clemmensen made 15 saves on 18 shots for the Devils, who suffered their fifth straight home loss.

They had beaten the Hurricanes five straight times at the Meadowlands.
