MEXICO CITY, March 4 (UPI) -- Juan Montoya, who left the European Formula One series to race in NASCAR this year, spun out a teammate Sunday and won the Busch Telcel-Motorola 200.
Montoya collided with the car driven by teammate Scott Pruett with eight laps to go and then fought off Denny Hamlin for his first win in a NASCAR event.
"I'm very sorry about what happened with Scott," Montoya said. "I thought he saw me and when he came across I had no room to go."
Pruett was clearly upset at the incident as Montoya found controversy in only his third weekend of NASCAR racing.
"Of all the people to take out -- your teammate," Pruett said. "That was just lowdown, nasty, dirty driving."
