Del Rio ends potential QB controversy

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Jacksonville Coach Jack Del Rio announced Thursday the Jaguars would open training camp this summer with Byron Leftwich as their No. 1 quarterback.

Because David Garrard had performed well during the 2006 season while filling in for the injured Leftwich, speculation had arisen that a competition would take place during the summer.

Del Rio squelched that thought with his pronouncement at the NFL's annual testing session for potential draft choices.

Leftwich started the first six games in 2006 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Garrard threw for 876 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Jaguars missed the playoffs with an 8-8 record.
