VINA DEL MAR, Chile, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Nicolas Massu locked up a quarterfinal berth Wednesday in the round-robin portion of the Movistar Open tennis tournament in Chile.
Massu, who finished second in the event last year, defeated Gorka Fraile 6-3, 6-2, and is 2-0 in his three-player group.
Fifth-seeded Luis Horna also advanced, winning his second group match 6-3, 6-1 over Ricardo Mello.
Also Wednesday, fourth-seeded Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo defeated Diego Hartfield. 6-4, 6-1; No. 7 Albert Montanes beat Gustavo Kuerten. 6-1, 6-4; eighth-seeded Martin Vassallo Arguello ousted Boris Pashanski. 7-6 (7-2), 6-4; Ivan Navarro Pastor eliminated Diego Junqueira, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Junqueira was filling in for No. 2 seeded Gaston Gaudio, who withdrew because of a left thigh injury.
The winners of the eight three-player groups move into the quarterfinals bracket. The eventual tournament winner will take home $67,110.
