NHL: Washington 7, Carolina 3

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Alexander Semin had two goals and an assist, and the Washington Capitals erupted for three first-period goals Saturday night in a 7-3 rout of Carolina.

Eric Fehr scored the first goal of his career, Chris Clark and Brooks Laich also scored, and Olaf Kolzig made 34 saves on 37 shots for the Capitals, who avenged a 6-2 pounding at Raleigh Friday night in the home-and-home series -- and have five wins in their last 11 games.

Justin Williams, Erik Cole and David Tanabe scored goals for Carolina, and Cam Ward gave up seven goals on only 23 shots for the Panthers, who have three losses in their last four games.

On the power play, Washington went 2-for-6, while Carolina was 1-for-6.

Carolina's Ray Whitney had an eight-game points' streak broken.
