Clijsters, Hingis to clash at Australian

MELBOURNE, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters and Martina Hingis each won Australian Open matches Monday, setting up a top 10 quarterfinal in the year's first Grand Slam event.

Clijsters, the tournament's fourth seed, was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over 15th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova in a fourth-round match and moved to the quarters. There she'll meet Hingis, whom she defeated in three sets in the Australian Open quarterfinals last year.

Hingis is seeded sixth and played to that level in beating Dinara Safina 6-2, 6-2 in her match Monday in making it to the Australian Open quarterfinals for the ninth time.

Also Monday, 12th-seeded Anna Chakvetadze knocked out No. 8 Patty Schnyder, 6-4, 6-1. Chakvetadze draws top-seeded Maria Sharapova in quarterfinals. The Chakvetadze-Sharapova winner meets the Clijsters-Hingis winnerint he tournament semifinals.

In the other half of the women's draw, 16th-seeded Shahar Peer plays Serena Williams and 10th-seeded Nicole Vaidisova goes against Lucia Safarova. It was Safarova who upset defending champion Amelie Mauresmo in the fourth-round.
