Highly seeded women ousted in Australia

MELBOURNE, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Amelie Mauresmo and third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova were both upset in straight sets in fourth-round play Sunday in the Australian Open.

Mauresmo was ousted by 19-year-old Lucie Safarova, ranked 70th in the world, in a one-sided 6-4 6-3 match while Kuznetsova committed 24 unforced errors in dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match to 16th-seeded Shahar Peer.

Those losses will show in the next round of women's rankings with Maria Sharapova, the No. 1 seed at the Australian Open, moving to No. 1 in the world even if she doesn't advance any further in Melbourne.

Serena Williams advanced to the Australian quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win Sunday over 11-seeded Jelena Jankovic. She next faces Peer.

Also Sunday, 10th-seeded Nicole Vaidisova moved into the quarterfinals by beating seventh-seeded Elena Dementieva, 6-3, 6-3. Vaidisova will meet Safarova in the round of eight.

Na Li the 19th seed, beat ninth-seeded Dinara Safina, 6-2, 6-2, in a third-round match that was postponed by rain Saturday. Anna Chakvetadze, the 12th seed, got past Jelena Kostanic Tosic, 6-4, 6-4 in another third-round affair; and 15th seed Daniela Hantuchova rallied to beat Ashley Harkleroad, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-3.
