Paraguay takes big lead at golf World Cup

SUN CITY, South Africa, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Julieta Granada and Celeste Troche powered Paraguay to a four-shot lead Friday after the first round of the Women's World Cup of Golf in South Africa.

Granada, the ADT Championship winner, and Troche teamed for a five-under-par 139 in the singles format to the lead over second-place South Korea.

The South Korean team of Ji Yai Shin and Young Kim was the only other to break par Friday, turning in a one-under 143.

Italy and Scotland carded one-over 145s to share third place -- one shot ahead of New Zealand (146) and two in front of Australia (148) and Wales (148). The United States and Denmark were tied at five-over 149.

A double bogey by Troche on the par-five fifth hole put the Paraguayan team over par, but she had birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to get the team back under par. Troche finished with a 69 while Granada overcame a pair of bogeys in the round to shoot 70.

The tournament switches to foursomes for Saturday and winds up Sunday in the better ball format.
