NBA: Boston 89, Portland 81

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Tony Allen had 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals Monday night, as the Boston Celtics beat Portland, 89-81.

Ryan Gomes had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Wally Szczerbiak scored 15 for Boston. Al Jefferson finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who broke a six-game losing streak.

Brandon Roy had 18 points and five assists and Ime Udoka and Martell Webster each had 11 points for the Trail Blazers, who lost their third straight game and their fifth out of six.

The Celtics took control during a see-saw third quarter, scoring 10 of the period's final 14 points. Boston then opened the fourth quarter with an 11-4 run -- with Allen scoring seven -- pushing their lead to 81-72.

Portland staged a rally, scoring seven of the next nine points and pulling to with 83-79 with 1:26 left. Boston took back control of the game when Szczerbiak intercepted a Zach Randolph pass and took it to the hoop for a dunk -- putting the Celtics up by six.

The Celtics shot 44 percent from the floor. Portland hit 39 percent of its shots.
