NHL: Toronto 9, N.Y. Rangers 2

TORONTO, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Kyle Wellwood scored three goals and Toronto scored five times in the first period Saturday night on the way to a 9-2 rout of the New York Rangers.

After the initial period, the Maple Leafs had a 5-1 lead. They scored three more times in the second period to increase their lead to 8-1 at the second intermission.

Wellwood recorded his first career hat trick and added two assists. Alexei Ponikarovsky had two goals and three assists; Mats Sundin added three assists; and goalie Andrew Raycroft gave up two goals on only 13 shots for the Maple Leafs, who have won three in a row following a seven-game losing streak.

Darius Kasparaitis and Martin Straka scored for New York. Jaromir Jagr had two assists, while goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist and Kevin Weekes combined to give up nine goals on 32 shots for the Rangers, who had six-game winning streak snapped.

Toronto had three power play goals, and New York had none.
