Schmidt says he is going to the Dodgers

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Free agent right-hander Jason Schmidt is on his way to the Los Angeles Dodgers from San Francisco.

He made the move Wednesday during the Winter Baseball Meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

MLB.com reported that Schmidt told former Giants teammates he has accepted a three-year, $47 million offer.

The 33-year-old Schmidt has also pitched for Atlanta and Pittsburgh.

He has a 127-90 record with a 3.91 ERA in his 12-year major league career. He enjoyed his best season in 2005, when he went 17-5 with the Giants with a league-leading 2.34 ERA.

The report said the deal is contingent upon Schmidt passing a physical examination.

Schmidt also was being heavily pursued by the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners.

His signing likely will speed up the Dodgers' efforts to make a deal involving right-hander Brad Penny for a much-needed power hitter.
