COL FB: South Florida 24, West Virginia 19

MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- South Florida used an inspired defensive effort Saturday afternoon to upset seventh-ranked West Virginia, 24-19.

Quarterback Matt Grothe ran for one touchdown and passed for another; gained 66 yards on 20 rushing attempts; and went 22-for-30 passing for 279 yards for the Golden Bulls (8-4, 4-3 Big East), but the defense forced four turnoners and held all-America candidate Steve Slaton to only 43 yards on 17 carries.

South Florida finished the regular season with three wins in its last four games.

Pat White threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions; Darius Reynaud rushed for 67 yards on only two attempts; and Pat McAfee kicked two field goals for the Mountaineers (9-2, 4-2), who had a two-game winning streak snapped and likely will need a lot of help to secure a BCS bowl berth. They trailed, 14-6, at the half, and never led in the contest.
