Mauresmo: Will play at Madrid

MADRID, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Reigning champion Amelie Mauresmo says she will compete in the WTA Tour Championships at the end of the season.

The current top-ranked player in women's tennis is sidelined with a right-shoulder injury, which forced her to pull out of last week's Zurich Open.

Before she withdrew, the ailing shoulder forced Mauresmo to double-fault five times in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, second-round win against Australia's Samantha Stosur.

"I am not yet at 100 percent and I am not actually playing yet," she told the BBC Thursday. "But I hope to be on court by the end of the week and fully fit for Madrid. If I finish the year top ranked, then I will be happy."

The season-ending event will be played in Madrid, Spain, Nov. 6-12.

Among Mauresmo's chief opposition will be Justine Henin-Hardenne -- who has an injured calf -- and Maria Sharapova.
