SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Curtis Brown scored a goal 2:12 into overtime, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues in the teams' NHL season opener.

Milan Michalek had a pair of power-play goals Thursday for the Sharks, who kept the Blues winless in their last nine season openers.

St. Louis' Bill Guerin forced the extra period with a goal at the 19:54 mark of the third period. But early in overtime Brown was able to poke in a rebound past Blues goalie Manny Legace for the game-winner.

The game started with the scoring spree, with the Blues' Dan Hinte scoring 36 seconds into the game on Sharks' goalie Vesa Toskala. San Jose tied the score about two minutes later on a tip-in by Carle only to have St. Louis retake the lead at the 3:42 mark on a Jamal Mayers goal.

Michalek's goals came in a 46-second span of the second period when the Sharks had two-man advantages and made the score 3-2 San Jose. Lee Stempniak tied the score midway through the period. It wasn't until the 14:18 mark of the third period that the Sharks took a 4-3 lead when Mark Bell scored on a 3-on-1 breakaway.
