NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Petr Prucha assisted on both goals by Brendan Shanahan Thursday night as the New York Rangers beat the Washington Capitals, 5-2.
Martin Straka also scored twice and added one assist. Former Capital Jaromir Jagr and Blair Betts scored once, Adam Hall had one assist and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves on 27 shots for the Rangers (1
0), who won their season opener after ending the 2005-06 season with a five-game losing streak.
With the two goals, Shanahan -- who signed a free-agent contract in the off-season after helping Detroit win three Stanley Cup titles -- reached the 600-mark for his career.
The tally by Jagr gave him 592 goals.
Alexander Semin and Rico Fata each scored once. Chris Clark, Kris Beech, Brian Sutherby and Brian Pothier all had one assist and goaltender Olaf Kolzig allowed four goals on the 35 shots he faced for the Capitals (0-1-0).
