GUANGZHOU, China, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Russia's Anna Chakvetadze Sunday won the title at the Guangzhou International Women's Open tennis tournament in Guangzhou, China.
In the final, the third-seeded Chakvetadze beat No. 4 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, 6-1, 6-4, to earn her first career WTA Tour singles crown.
"I knew I had to be really aggressive today, and it worked," said Chakvetadze. "Maybe the score looked easy, but it was a very difficult match. She is a top player and it was not easy to beat her. I just took my chances and fortunately I came out on top. I am so happy to win my first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title. I have been working and hoping for this for a long time."
Sunday's win was the fourth in as many tries for Chakvetadze against Medina Garrigues.
For her victory, Chakvetadze received a first prize check of $28,000.
