Steinhauer wins the Women's British Open

LYTHAM, England, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Sherri Steinhauer Sunday forged a three-shot victory at the Women's British Open Golf Tournament at Lytham, England.

Steinhauer, who was the leader after two of the first three rounds, won the tournament for the third time -- for the first time as a major -- despite shooting only an even-par 72 in the final round.

Her final score was 7-under 281.

"I feel like I'm living in a dream," said a jubilant Steinhauer. "I absolutely am stunned. I was extremely nervous at the beginning of the day. On the driving range, I was terrible. I'm speechless. This is incredible for me."

Cristie Kerr (71) and Sophie Gustafson (72) tied for runner-up at 4-under 284. Lorena Ochoa (73) and first-round leader Juli Inkster (73) tied for fourth place at 3-under 284.

World No. 1 Annika Sorenstam (79) tied for 31st place. Michelle Wie (74) tied for 26th at 6-over 294.

Steinhauer won $305,440.
