Ronde Barber signs contract extension

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber has signed a contract extension with the Buccaneers.

No terms were disclosed, but the Tampa Tribune reported that the nine-year veteran, who was a third-round pick out of the University of Virginia in 1997, will receive $24 million over the next five years if all contract incentives are reached.

"This team has always put me in a position to succeed and I think I've done a lot to help this team win," said Barber on the team's Web site. "These days, there aren't a lot of guys who get to play their whole career for one team, and to do so here would be an honor for me. They made it clear that they appreciate me."

Barber has been chosen for the Pro Bowl three times, started 103 consecutive games, has never missed a game because of injury and has played in 129 career games.
