"I played very well all day," said Inkster about her best round ever during a major tournament. "I hit a lot of fairways. I hit a lot of greens. I played the par 5s well today. I gave myself a lot of opportunities. So you know, overall it was a very good day."

Maria Hjorth and Silvia Cavalleri are tied for second place at 3-under 69. Allison Hanna, Gwladys Nocera, and Nina Reis each shot 2-under 70 to tie for fourth.

Defending champion Jeong Jang opened with a 6-over-par 78, Michelle Wie shot 2-over 74 and Annika Sorenstam was even-par 72.

If Inkster, 46, wins the event, she would be the oldest player in LPGA history to win a major championship.
