Higher seeds win at Stuttgart

STUTTGART, Germany, July 20 (UPI) -- The higher seeds were winners Thursday in the third round of the Mercedes Cup Tennis Tournament in Stuttgart, Germany.

Second-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat qualifier Diego Junqueira of Argentina, 6-1, 6-4; No. 3 seed David Ferrer of Spain topped unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-4; and fifth-seeded Jose Acasuso of Argentina beat local favorite Simon Greul, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-4.

Also winning were No. 13 Luis Horna of Peru, and non-seeds Juan Monaco of Argentina; Oliver Marach of Austria; Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador; and Florian Mayer of Germany.

In Friday's quarterfinals, Berdych meets Lapentti; Ferrer plays Mayer; Acasuso faces Marach; and Horna plays Monaco.
