MLB: Boston 4, Texas 3

BOSTON, June 9 (UPI) -- Trot Nixon hit a three-run homer in the first inning Friday night as Boston edged the Texas Rangers, 4-3.

Nixon had one run, four hits and three RBI; Coco Crisp had one run and three hits; and Mike Lowell hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the Red Sox (35-23), who have won their last two games.

The winner was closer Jonathan Papelbon (1-1).

Boston starter Tim Wakefield held Texas to two runs and four hits, one night after the Rangers lost, 16-12, to Kansas City.

Michael Young hit a two-run homer, and Gary Matthews Jr. had two runs and two hits for Texas (32-28).

The losing pitcher was Francisco Cordero (5-4).

Texas has lost its last two games.
