Aaron Rowland needs nose surgery

PHILADELPHIA, May 12 (UPI) -- Center-fielder Aaron Rowand of the Philadelphia Phillies needs surgery on his broken nose.

He suffered the injury while running into the fence Thursday night against the New York Mets. He made a highlight reel catch on a bases-loaded fly ball off the bat of Mets' right-fielder Xavier Nady in the first inning.

"I've seen some great plays," said Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel. "That one definitely ranks up there with the best of them. That might be the best effort and determination I've ever seen."

Rowand, who stayed down on the ground for several minutes afterwards, received attention while still in the outfield and was forced to leave the game with both the nose injury and lacerations around his nasal area.

He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for stitches and was scheduled for surgery on Friday morning.

Team medical personnel did not know how much time Rowland would miss. He was batting .310 with six homers.
