DETROIT, May 3 (UPI) -- Alexis Gomez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday night as Detroit edged the L.A. Angels, 2-1, for its sixth win in a row.
Brandon Inge homered and scored both runs; and Magglio Ordonez had two hits for the Tigers, who improved to 19-9.
In relief, the winning pitcher was Joel Zumaya (1-0), who recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning. Fernando Rodney threw a scoreless ninth to notch his fifth save of the season.
Vladimir Guerrero had a hit and drove in the lone run; while Orlando Cabrera, Adam Kennedy and Chone Figgins each had a hit for the Angels (12-16), who have lost six straight games.
Losing pitcher Jeff Weaver (1-4) allowed only two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
