SAN DIEGO, April 4 (UPI) -- San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds got a hostile reaction from fans in San Diego, who threw a syringe at him in a commentary on steroid use allegations.
While Bonds went 1-for-4 and scored the Giants' only run in the 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres, he was booed throughout the game, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News said.
Fans held up signs reading: "Barr-oids," "Cheaters Never Prosper" and "Bonds 1st in Hall of Shame," The Washington Post said.
As Bonds was leaving the field after the eighth inning, someone threw a needle-less syringe onto the field.
Bonds is at the center of a Major League Baseball investigation into alleged steroid use as he chases Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron on baseball's all-time home run list.
The 41-year-old opened his 21st season with 708 home runs, six behind Ruth and 47 behind Aaron.
