MLB: San Diego 6, San Francisco 1

SAN DIEGO, April 3 (UPI) -- Mike Piazza homered in his San Diego debut Monday as the Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants, 6-1.

Khalil Green had a two-run homer for San Diego. Jake Peavy (1-0) pitched seven innings to earn the win, surrendering just one run on five hits while striking out five.

Barry Bonds, who played just 14 games in 2005 after undergoing three arthroscopic surgeries on his right knee, went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Giants.

Bonds entered the season with 708 career homers, seven shy of passing Babe Ruth (714) for second all-time and 48 short of surpassing Hank Aaron (755) for the all-time lead.

Jason Schmidt (0-1) allowed four runs on seven hits through seven innings while suffering the loss as the Giants had a five-game Opening Day winning streak halted.
