Ames runs away with Players Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla., March 26 (UPI) -- Stephen Ames overwhelmed the field Sunday to win the Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., by six shots.

Ames won $1.4 million in the world's richest golf tournament -- and did so in style, beginning the round with a one-shot lead and then posting the lowest score of the day.

His 5-under 67 on the TPC-Sawgrass Stadium Course included an eagle at the par-5 16th and gave him a 72-hole total of 14-under 274.

Retief Goose was a distant second at 280. Jim Furyk, Pat Perez, Henrik Stenson and rookie Camilo Villega shared third at 283.

Vijay Singh, who began the day tied for second, shot a 77 and finished 11 shots behind. Tiger Woods tied for 22nd after shooting a 3-over 75.

The best day of Ames' golfing life came a little more than a month after his worst day -- one that saw him eliminated by Woods, 9 & 8, in the first round of the World Golf Championship Match Play tournament.
