Rain delays second round at Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Thursday's scheduled quarterfinals at the Dubai Duty Free Women's Tennis Open were postponed by rain.

In a rain-halted match, top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo was leading Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-6 (3-2), in the first set. The red-hot Mauresmo, who is No. 2 in the latest world rankings, is after a 17th consecutive match victory. She has back-to-back titles at Paris and Antwerp in the last two weeks and captured the Australian Open last month.

Last Sunday, Mauresmo beat top-ranked Kim Clijsters in the final of the Diamond Games tournament at Antwerp, Belgium. She could return to the No. 1 ranking with a second career title at Dubai this week. She won the event in 2002 and has not lost since dropping her first match of 2006 to Ana Ivanovic in the second round of the Medibank International on Jan. 10 at Sydney, Australia.
