Mark Wilson on top in Tucson

TUCSON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Mark Wilson shot 8-under-par 64 on Thursday to take the opening-round lead at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson, Ariz.

He leads a group of five players -- Gabriel Hjertstedt, Duffy Waldorf, Jerry Kelly, John Riegger and Doug Barron -- by two shots. Those five are tied at 6-under 66.

Wilson, a journeyman, toiled on a number of other tours, such as the Australian, before getting his PGA Tour card in 2002.

In the first round of the Chrysler Classic, 100 of the 144 players entered in the tournament broke par. Alex Cejka, Carlos Franco, Heath Slocum and Bob Estes led a group at 5-under 67.

Steven Bowditch withdrew after a 10-over 82. Sixteen golfers, including Champions Tour member Don Pooley, shot even-par 72.

Only 28 players failed to shoot par or better.
