Roddick advances in SAP opener

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Andy Roddick defeated Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round of the $380,000 SAP Open Tuesday in San Jose, Calif.

Last year, Roddick needed just 50 minutes to dispatch unseeded Spaniard Cyril Saulnier, 6-0, 6-4, in the final to claim his second straight SAP Open championship.

Fellow American and No. 5 seed James Blake, meanwhile, was ousted by Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo in the biggest upset of the day, 6-3, 7-5.

Elsewhere, American qualifier Brian Wilson knocked off eighth-seeded Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5).

Also, Swede Robin Soderling upended Romania's Andrei Pavel 6-3, 6-4, while American Justin Gimelstob bested Bjorn Rehnquist of Sweden, 6-1, 6-4.

This week's winner will claim $52,000.
