Reports: Grizzlies interested in Atkins

MEMPHIS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The Memphis Grizzlies may be in the hunt for veteran NBA point guard Chucky Atkins.

Adkins' contract with Washington was bought out by the Wizards Wednesday, making him a free agent. When he clears waivers, the 5-foot-11 inch Atkins is free to sign with another team.

"Chucky is a veteran player who is in the last year of his contract," said Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld on the team's Web site. "He has been a real professional and this will allow him an opportunity to look for a situation that will give him the playing time that he desires."

The Washington Post and Memphis Commercial Appeal both reported Thursday that the Grizzlies are potential employers for Atkins, who is in his seventh season out of South Florida. Memphis has not found a replacement for Damon Stoudamire, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Portland Dec. 30.

Stoudamire underwent successful knee surgery earlier this week.
