HONG KONG, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Tommy Haas beat world No. 1 Roger Federer, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, Wednesday at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, Australia.
The match in the eight-man event was among several tune-ups for next week's Australian Open.
"This is not a setback," said an undaunted Federer, who was the classic's defending champion. "I don't think I played that bad. I had to struggle for rhythm in the first six games, but then he started to play better and better."
"This was definitely a good victory," said Haas, who is ranked No. 46. "It gives me good hope to hopefully play well next week."
Also winning were world No. 3 Andy Roddick, who beat No. 31 Gael Monfils, 6-2, 6-2. Federer beat Monfils last Saturday in the finals at Qatar.
"Everyone is trying to find their form and everyone is making sure they're ready to go next week," Roddick said.
