NHL: Tampa Bay 2, NY Islanders 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Martin St. Louis scored the game-winning goal while shorthanded with less than 5 minutes remaining Monday as Tampa Bay beat the New York Islanders, 2-1.

Vincent Lecavalier scored on a penalty shot and Sean Burke made 35 saves for Tampa Bay.

Jeffrey Hamilton scored the Islanders' lone goal. Garth Snow stopped 41 of the 43 shots he faced for New York, which has lost a season-high five straight games.

Tied 1-1 late in the third period, St. Louis was sent in on a breakaway by Paul Ranger while shorthanded. St. Louis beat Snow glove side high with a wrist shot from the slot to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead with 4:57 left.
