COL FB: Missouri 38, South Carolina 31

SHREVEPORT, La., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Brad Smith ran for three touchdowns and passed for another Friday as Missouri beat South Carolina, 38-31, in the Independence Bowl at Shreveport, La.

The Tigers rallied from a 21-point first quarter deficit as Smith, who had a 60-yard run on the Tigers' first play, accounted for 432 total yards. He was 21-for-37 passing for 282 yards, the one touchdown and one interception, and added 150 yards rushing on 21 carries.

Chase Coffman made eight catches for 99 yards and a touchdown and Martin Rucker added 83 yards on five receptions for Missouri (7-5).

Blake Mitchell was 20-for-38 for 266 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions; Mike Davis gained 125 yards and scored twice on 18 carries; and wide receiver Sidney Rice set two Independence Bowl records with 191 yards and one touchdown on 12 catches for the Gamecocks (7-5), who had a three-game bowl winning streak snapped.
