49ers sign Anderson, cut kicker Cortez

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers waived kicker Jose Cortez on Tuesday and signed safety Marques Anderson.

Cortez appeared in one game with the Niners -- his third team this season -- with regular kicker Joe Nedney sidelined with a groin injury. He made two extra points and missed a 34-yard field goal attempt in a 33-22 loss at Tennessee on Nov. 27.

Nedney returned to action for Sunday's game with Arizona and Cortez was inactive.

Cortez, 30, spent the first seven weeks of the season with Dallas, connecting on 12-of-16 field goal attempts and 13-of-14 extra point attempts for 49 points.

Released by the Cowboys on Oct. 24, he signed with Philadelphia and had no field goal tries in four games.

Anderson, a four-year veteran, began the year with Denver and appeared in six games with the Broncos before being waived on Nov. 16.
