NHL: Carolina 2, Ottawa 1

OTTAWA, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Martin Gerber stopped 35 of the 36 shots and Mike Commodore scored with less than a minute left in the second period Tuesday as Carolina beat Ottawa, 2-1.

Ray Whitney scored his fifth goal of the season as Carolina won for the 10th time in its last 11 games despite being outshot 36-19.

Daniel Alfredsson scored his 16th goal of the season for his 600th career NHL point and Dominik Hasek made 17 saves for Ottawa, which had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Dany Heatley recorded a secondary assist on Alfredsson's goal to improve his season-opening points scoring streak to 17 games with 15 goals and 14 assists.
